Fire Extinguisher Installation & Maintenance

If a fire started now, do you have the correct fire extinguisher to put it out safely? Do you have a schedule for fire extinguisher servicing? If you tried to escape the building, are you sure that your extinguishers are positioned on the route to safety?

The potential for a small fire to grow and cause significant damage should not be
underestimated. Are you 100% confident you have the right fire safety measures in place?

Selecting and siting the appropriate type of fire extinguishers to protect your premises is vitally important. No different from ensuring you have appropriate insurance cover – in fact, not having the correct fire-fighting equipment in place is just like driving without insurance, both ethically and legally.

Absolute Property Surveys works with a team of competent approved contractors to install and service fire extinguishers in line with the latest fire guidance.

You have installed the necessary fire extinguishers in your property, a positive step towards ensuring fire safety protocols in your property. But now it is important to consider how to maintain units that ensure they are in safe working order for use. This is where fire extinguisher servicing and maintenance are a crucial part of fire safety.

Fire extinguishers should be serviced annually each year. These services should check the safety, compliance and functionality of the unit according to the British Standard code of practice (BS 5306-3).

In addition to these professional services, it is recommended that a designated person in the property conduct a visual check each month. These visual inspections should look out for pressure loss, physical damage, and missing tags.

Absolute Property Surveys offers fire extinguisher servicing and maintenance to ensure that your occupants are confident that fire extinguishers are placed correctly and are usable in the case of an emergency.

There are three different classifications of fire extinguishers that are designed to be used for different types of fire. It is incredibly important that users are aware of which extinguisher to use in cases of fire, as using the wrong type can be dangerous and may even cause the fire to spread and become more dangerous.

If you are unsure what fire extinguishers are available, they can be simply identified by a colour code that correlates to their class and use. Fire extinguisher types according to colour include:

  • Red: For Class A fires, and are usable organic materials (wood, paper, textiles).
  • Cream: For Class A & B fires, suitable for organic materials (wood, cardboard, paper, coal, etc.), flammable liquids (petrol, paint, & turpentine).
  • Blue: For Class A, B, & C fires, suitable for organic materials, flammable liquids, and electrical equipment (up to 1000v).
  • Black: CO2 extinguishers are suitable for Class B fires, and suitable for electrical fires, and flammable liquids.
  • Yellow: Class A fire extinguishers are suitable for cooking fat fires as well as organic materials.

Well-maintained and serviced fire extinguishers can last between 10 and 15 years. However, it is recommended that you follow the guidance and recommendations of professional experts following your annual service if your unit needs to be replaced earlier.
